International Symposium on Expressive Arts Therapy

    May 6th - 8th 2010

Workshops on Body, voice & gesture in art making & images

    with 2 international facilitators

    “Come, relax, learn, and grow”

Intangible Body Gestures and their Translation

into Tangible Shape and Form with Sibylle Cseri

This workshop offers an exploration on the relationship between the art making process and the body as a vehicle towards mark making, the body as an echo between the senses and the creative act and the body as a manifestation into tangible artistic form.
In this sense, together we will investigate the dialogue between the trace and the "invisible" senses in order to gain a deeper understanding on the patient's inner process'.

The Body, the Voice and the Image with Markus Alexander

How does one artistic modality help to shape and inform discoveries in another modality? How do changes in what and how we see, effect how we create sound?
The body has the ability to move energy for voice-work, dance and image-making. This workshop will deepen the participant’s capacity to develop enough skill to shift to the place where inspiration happens. These two basic ingredients of the creative process, inspiration and skill will be explored in a safe and delicate environment.
Shifts in awareness have the potential to create shifts in our everyday lives.
Participants will be given support and instruction for sounding paintings and moving sound. This will be followed by improvisation in a Dance/Theatre/Choir structure.

K.A.T.I Executive Director, Monica Carpendale will be showing her two films about art therapy. The first is a 50 minute film about the use and value of art therapy for a woman healing from chronic post-traumatic stress disorder. The second is a 30 minute film about a woman with multiple handicaps who used art therapy as a means of expressing her inner thoughts and feelings in a symbolic and emotional way.

‘An Angel with a Broken Wing’

Art Therapy and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder – Film

This story is about identity and survival. The film explores the client’s dynamic relationship with the art therapy as well as her art therapist by focusing on the closing art review.  It also includes several songs the client wrote and an interview done eight years later reflecting back on the art process. Many key issues are revealed in the context of reviewing her artwork. Her ability to express herself through art and metaphor is evident throughout as she speaks passionately of how art therapy has saved her life. The artist client’s interest in participating in this film is to have her art and therapeutic process be of value in helping others.

    The Art of Lorraine Beninger:

Personal Maps and Collage Constructions – Film

This inspiring film conveys the excitement of discovering a media and method of creating art that was both emotionally satisfying and symbolically meaningful for an individual with multiple handicaps. Someone who is mentally and physically handicapped, including being legally blind, can very effectively use creative art making within a therapeutic process. Symbols, themes and color in her art gave expression to her anger, fear, sadness, warmth and humor. The use of tactile materials enabled her to be successful in creating art and reduced her anxiety about her worsening eyesight. Lorraine hopes this film will be shown “all around the world” to inspire people to offer art therapy to individuals living with disabilities.

    WORKSHOP # 1 OF 5

    EMERGENCY WORKSHOP IN ART THERAPY

     9:00 am – 12:00 pm Wednesday October 28, 2009  Fee: $60.00

The following workshop represents a model which was built and applied with many different populations, children, aged people and adults, Jews and Arabs, during the recurring wars (Lebanon and Gaza), suffering during 8 years from random rocket attacks. The purpose was prevention of PTSD and overcoming the difficult and painful period.  The presentation documents this intervention.

Originally it was aimed at Art Therapists, psychologists, and other mental health staff – Jews and Arabs. They work with already traumatized children and youth in the shelled parts of Israel, have to contain much pain and to be strong for others. They were close to break down, or already broke down.

The same model served the presenter later in many cases of crisis, with groups and individuals. Especially, it was adapted with some very dissociated clients, giving voice (visual representation) to the different Sub – Personalities!

     Objectives:

    1. Participants will learn a helpful method for crisis intervention by bridging between a state of freezing or collapsing and functioning.

      2.  Providing tools for self-regulation and helping others to self regulate.

     3. Strengthening the felt sense of well being connected to resources within the person and preventing PTSD.

    WORKSHOP #2 OF 5

    Objectives:

Issues of identity, of all kinds (gender, culture, etc.) will be touched. A new meaning to the therapeutic relationship will be given. Patient and therapist have the opportunity to experience together the effect of different sensual stimuli on bodily and mental memories. The observed results should be empowerment and improvement of self-esteem.

What each participant should bring to the sculpting workshop:

    - One bag full of old newspapers.

    - In a second bag:   a) Headgear: hat or wig or kerchief.

           b) Cloths “still warm from your body” (things you wore): shirt or                             dress with long sleeves, long trousers or long tights/leggings, socks and shoes or boots.

                                    c)One coat-hanger.

                                    d) personal accessories like a belt, jewelry, shawls.

                                    e) writing tools, like a notebook and a pen.

                                    f) Optional: your camera.

    WORKSHOP #3 OF 5

DRAWING AS A PLAY IN FIVE ACTS ASSESSMENT TECHNIQUE FOR GROUPS

    1:30 -4:30 pm Thursday October 29, 2009 Fees: $60.00

This is a technique that helps understand in a very short time the development of group dynamics and the change, which happens within the process. It can be applied at a first meeting with groups/families/couples/dyads and in supervision or also as an intervention whenever assessment is needed. It is appropriate for small groups and also for many participants divided into several subgroups.

    Objectives:

Participants will learn a method, which helps in an easy way to be aware of issues of group dynamics, family constellation and different roles. Is there a leader?

Due to the therapeutic intervention eventual changes affecting everyone in any group will be experienced and processed.

A discussion should lead to a deeper understanding, facilitating empathy and compassion towards the other members.

    WORKSHOP #4 OF 5

BEING STUCK IN SUPERVISION: A “YEHHHH” OR AN “OYYYE”

    9:00am – 4:00pm Friday October 30, 2009 Fees: $100.00

Objectives: To accept the challenge or to surrender? By combining creative and practical approaches, Creative supervision will inspire supervisors to re-think their practice. The therapists and the client’s resources will be emphasized, in order to cope with the difficulties and being stuck in therapy.

What each participant should bring to the workshop after preparing her/himself:

    Preparation:

Order all the client’s works in chronological order – ideally not less than 7. If there are many, you choose the meaningful which represent every stage of the process.

Write a short summary about development and process:

    • What changes could you observe (in work and behavior)?
    • Development of the therapeutic relationship.
    • What were the goals in your treatment for this client?
    • Define a point of difficulty or stuck ness in this process.
    • Define one central question you wish to bring to supervision.
    • After all this make one work of your own, reflecting your inner picture of this client.

Bring all this to our meeting.

    WORKSHOP #5 OF 5

    PHENOMENOLOGICAL PHOTOMONTAGE

    10:00am – 3:00pm   Saturday November 1, 2009  Fee $60

Workshop for individuals, couples and groups.

    • To show how photographs which usually are projections of reality make imaginary distancing possible.
    • To emphasize constructive integration; imagination will be titillated; reality testing; coping with fantastic situations (danger of associative overflow!) and: tension release and fun! Ethical issues in Art Therapy will be discussed.

The Mandala has been used for healing and spiritual symbolism for thousands of years inAsia, and especially in Tibetan Buddhism as a tool for meditation and a pathway to enlightenment. Carl Jung introduced the Mandala to the Conscience of Westerners and believed it to be the archetypal symbol of wholeness.  Working with the Mandala is a very powerful way of centering and provides a potent tool for self-awareness and individuation.  This workshop will explore the therapist's use of Mandala both for therapeutic self-care and for client assessment, intervention and treatment.

Participants will explore self-generated mandala: 1) a spontaneous mandala, 2) a free form mandala, and 3) complete a ritual mandala made within a meditative setting ready for framing. Students are required to bring a Journal, Small paint brushes (.00 and .01) .

    The Art of Resilience

For professional helpers there are costs of caring, as well as gifts of giving. In this workshop, we will review relevant research and use both cognitive and expressive modalities for self-assessment and management of resilience. As we pay particular attention to the double-edged sword of empathy, our greatest asset, yet our point of vulnerability, we will apply mindfulness practices and art activities to promote awareness and thus more control, especially of unconscious or somatic empathy. Honouring the importance of balance, we will explore the sources of our joy and inspiration as part of an ongoing resilience plan.

    Cost: $100.00
