Format Seminar

Learning Objectives:

·         To discuss clinical case material clearly and objectively.

·         To analyze the artwork and art making process.

·         To review group dynamics.

·         To trace changes in the artwork and clinical case material.

·         To identify and explore transference and counter transference material.

·         To apply theoretical and clinical knowledge in relationship to clinical work

·         To prepare for professional art therapy practice: resume writing, interviewing skills, application for jobs.

Requirements:

1.      All students are required to attend a supervision group on a regular basis. Students are required to come prepared to supervision by bringing in artwork and clinical concerns.

2.      Students are expected to participate actively in supervision and be willing to explore transference and counter transference reactions.

3.      Every practica must have a contract with the Institute. Every practica client file must include an intake form and a release form, except in special circumstances determined by the practica placement.

Distance supervision requirements:
Students must email client notes and images with pseudonyms to the supervisor a day prior to the scheduled supervision time. See On-Line Supervision, below, for more details.

Assignments and Evaluation:

This course is evaluated on a pass, honours, or incomplete basis. Assignments will be corrected and repeated until a pass is reached.

Assignments:

1.      First year students are required to submit practica notes for 1 client (4 sessions) at the end of each month to their supervisor. Students should be encouraged to develop a genogram for each client.

2.      A complete clinical assessment report must be done each year (5-10 pages): includes a description, a genogram, art assessment, diagnostic formulation and treatment plan.  The outline for the assignment is in the KATI student handbook and will be reviewed in class.

3.      Summary reports must be done on all groups and individuals at the end of each semester. These are to be reviewed by the supervisor and then are revised and placed in the clinical file.

4.      It is suggested that all students maintain a journal to keep track of questions, issues, transferences & counter-transferences, personal responses and assessments of the session or group. This is a personal journal and not required to be submitted.

Please note: Supervision group hours will vary depending on the size of the group. The same ratio of client hours to supervision is applied. The new CATA (2009) ratio of supervision hours is two hours of supervision for 10 hours of direct client contact, with 350 hours of direct client contact required over the two-year period. All students will have received a minimum of 70 hours of supervision. Students average between 5 to 8 hours of direct client contact per week. At no time are students to be carrying more than 10 hours per week. Distance students are scheduled for 1 to 1 1/2 hours of individual supervision on a weekly schedule during the semester depending on practica commitments.

Case studies stay on file at the Institute, unless a) the student has a signed form by the client stating that the case study may stay with the student and be presented in other educational or professional situations; b) the student is working in a clinical setting where the files and case studies are kept in confidential records.

On-Line Supervision

Description:
The on-line program provides an opportunity for distance supervision with certified Supervisors in Art Therapy. Participants will receive case consultation or supervision based on the entire spectrum of art therapy intervention models (directive-to-nondirective). Supervisee students follow the supervision contract set out by the school.

Supervision Activities:

Weekly reporting of sessions, or non-sessions (clients don’t show), which include the process of the session, the feelings of the therapist and an overall general picture of what has taken place. Two or three pertinent questions relating to the placement, the pathology, the session or the art therapy process, or the wishes of supervisee, etc., should be formulated with each supervision report. Images of the artwork are required to be sent by digital camera or by scanner.
