KATI 9: Expressive Therapy

39 Hours, 3 Credits 

Description:

This experiential course introduces a variety of expressive therapies and different orientations to psychotherapy. The main topics include photo-therapy, drama, movement, sand tray, play and poetry therapy.

Format:
It will be a combination of lectures, presentations and experiential workshops.

 

Learning Objectives:

    • To become familiar with a variety of expressive therapies.
    • To build skills in different expressive therapies.
    • To broaden understanding through the experience of different expressive therapeutic approaches.
    • To outline new activities within a theoretical framework.
    • To recognize the common psychotherapeutic theoretical threads which underlie the various expressive therapies.

Assignments and Evaluation: 

Book /workshop review (20%), handout & presentation (40%), paper (20%), participation (20%).

  1. Book or workshop review on an expressive therapy. The report should include an outline of the theory and intentions with the description of the activities presented. Any concerns or cautions should be identified. (2 - 4 pages)

  2. A paper on the principles and practice of expressive arts therapy. (6 – 8 pages)

  3. Handout and short presentation on an expressive therapy with one of the topics identified above, or approved by the instructor. Students must have the topic approved by the instructor to prevent overlaying presentations.
    1. Short presentation (max ½ hr) includes a handout (1 to 2 pages). Please make enough copies for your fellow students and the instructor.
    2. Suggested topics: music therapy, drama therapy, psychodrama, dance/ movement therapy, video therapy, narrative therapy, poetry therapy, play therapy, photo therapy. You may include an experiential activity. Please be aware that time management will be a factor in your grade. In the presentation attend to the key factors of the particular therapeutic modality and attempt to distill its essence.
